Basic Audio Mastering: Noise reduction
Noise reduction is something that was typically a problem in the older days when most recording was done with analog equipment using analog connections and many noisy guitar amps and gear. These days it is less of a problem with digital recording programs, digital effects, samples, guitar modeling effects and digital connections. With a little luck a mastering engineer doesn't have to remove any noise because the few tracks like maybe vocals or guitar have already been cleaned up during the mixing part. If there is any noise left in the mix it is a much more difficult problem to deal with.
Let's look at some of the steps in mastering for noise reduction.
