Basic Audio Mastering: Normalizing

Audio normalizing is a specific audio effect that is used on digital audio. Let's first look at what it is and then what it's used for and what the advantages are.

Most audio editing software and audio editors have a built in function named "normalize". This function is not a real time process and is not available as a plugin because it can not work in real time. Normalizing increases the audio level of an audio track to it's maximum without causing distortion. Almost all audio CDs, mp3 music, DVDs and anything else will have the level set to it's maximum. Of course this effect should not be confused with compression or loudness effects.
