Beyonce Dangerously In Love and Tony Maserati Solid State Logic's XL 9000 K Console
Using Solid State Logic's XL 9000 K Series SuperAnalogue console for the first time, Tony Maserati, renowned for his cutting-edge mixing style, completed the production on Beyonce's recent #1 album "Dangerously In Love" at the Hit Factory, Studio 3. Maserati was recently nominated for three Grammy awards and has also mixed tracks for some of today's best-known recording artists, including Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige and Marc Anthony among others.
Although Maserati has worked on Solid State Logic consoles since 1985 and almost exclusively on SSL consoles since the introduction of the SL 9000 J, he was still surprised by the ease of his transition to mixing on the SSL XL 9000 K.
I was really amazed at how quickly I was able to start mixing on this console, says Maserati. In the blink of an eye I was going back and forth between Pro Tools and the XL 9000 Ks new faster console computer, helping me to take the creative ideas that I had in my head and seamlessly integrate them through the console. Overall, working on the K made the entire mixing process better and faster.
One of the other features on the XL 9000 K that I really appreciated was the mix bus, adds Maserati. I like a big wide open two bus with a lot of headroom so I can hear the depth of field and imaging better. Also, the XL 9000 Ks improved bandwidth leads to the consoles overall enhanced sound.
Maserati notes, When you are mixing an album, there is a challenge every day and every minute. The XL 9000 K enabled me to overcome the challenges associated with every song quicker than any other console Ive ever worked on. The ability to have Pro Tools in the center section of the console was clearly a significant upgrade that led to the consoles increased functionality for me.
Maserati, clearly happy with the results of the work done on SSLs XL 9000 K, is already hard at work on Beyonces upcoming album and is again using the K. According to Maserati, in the future, he hopes to have a K installed in his living room!
Maserati was recently nominated for three Grammys including Best Engineered Album, Non Classical for his work on the Black Eyed Peas Elephunk album as well as two nominations for Record Of The Year for Beyonce featuring Jay-Z Crazy In Love and the Black Eyed Peas Where Is The Love.
