Sound and Audio Types: Sound, complex sine waves
A sound is not just a sine, or a saw tooth, or any other basic shape. A sound is usually a combination of different types of waves. In this next example a basic sine wave and another sine wave with a higher frequency have been mixed together. Listen to the included sound mp3 file.
The first lower frequency is a sine at 220 Hz
The second higher frequency is a sine at 440 Hz
What we really have hear is a wave that is actually much more like a real sound. It is a base frequency with it's first harmonic.
