Sound Mixing Equalizer Settings: Getting Good Lows
Getting good lows is very important in today's music. And especially getting a good balance between lows and highs in your mix. Many of today's popular music styles like R&B, Rap, Rock, Club, Hip Hop, Dance and Techno all need to have great lows to really make the songs sound good in clubs, on an ipod or mp3 player or at home.
Compression is a great tool to get a pump going when mixing, or to boost volume, but getting the lows to sound right starts with learning to use the equalizer when mixing or mastering. What's important to realize is that you can do many things in mastering but when the balance between different lows in the mix is wrong you can not fix it anymore during the mastering stage of the song.
Let's look at the basic techniques you should learn to use when balancing the lows, but we keep our focus on the equalizer. The basic equalizer techniques you will probably want to use:
