Steinberg Nuendo for 5.1 surround Digital Radio
The German public radio network Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) is using Steinberg’s Nuendo Media Production System as the workhorse of its continuing digital surround radio broadcasting services. Steinberg’s Nuendo Dolby Digital Encoder product is also used in the workflow of the 24 hour WDR radio broadcast in 5.1 surround which is among the first of its kind worldwide in public radio.
“Nuendo has been instrumental in our ability to provide 5.1 surround broadcasting services,” comments Dipl.-Ing.Heinz Peter Reykers, member of the audio systems technology department at WDR headquarters in Cologne, Germany. “Not only has it offered the required system stability and audio quality, but the forward-thinking integration of the Dolby Digital format in the form of a specialized plug-in has allowed us to provide advanced surround radio broadcasting services at an astoundingly low cost,” continues Reykers.
Lars Baumann, Senior Nuendo Product Manager at Steinberg comments: “We’re very pleased that Nuendo has been selected by WDR. Our product strategy for Nuendo has always aimed at providing the highest possible degree of flexibility and versatility, qualities without which Nuendo would not have been selected for this task,” he continues.
Over 80% of Germany is already covered by digital radio transmission, a figure which is steadily growing. Reykers is accordingly upbeat about the proliferation of surround broadcasting technology in German digital radio. “We’ve had many enquiries from colleagues at other German networks about our surround broadcasting capability, and our Nuendo-based system has been the source of much interest,” he states.
