Steinberg VoiceMachine PlugIn Real-time voice transformation VST PlugIn
Steinberg’s VoiceMachine is made up of two new effect PlugIns for the VST platform on PC or Mac, designed specifically for voice manipulation in real time.
The VoiceMachine Generator makes it possible to ‘play’ a voice as one would play an instrument. That way, an entire vocal arrangement can be created from the main vocal. The VM Generator creates up to four additional voices that can be added in real time using MIDI note on/off events. That means that, using a keyboard, single voices can be made into multi-voice arrangements triggered by a chord track in the sequencer program. However, VoiceMachine is not to be regarded as an electronic replacement for real singers but rather as a creative ‘harmony effect’ for a vocal or, of course, any other monophonic audio material. The VM Processor module makes it possible to change a melody or improve intonation.
But VoiceMachine can do even more – with Steinberg’s VST 2.0 interface it is possible to control every parameter of a PlugIn via a freely definable MIDI controller. Pitch and character of a voice can be manipulated independently from one another. This enables Pitch Shifting as well as generating a number of different effects for simulating various singing voices. That way, it is even possible to transfer a male voice’s character to a female voice. Methods for pitch manipulation of digital audio material available until now affected the basic frequency (pitch) and resonance characteristics (formants) equally. One of the effects of this was that voices began to sound unnatural quite quickly (‘helium-effect’).
VoiceMachine can change the basic frequency and the resonance characteristics separately – and it even does it in real time!
In order to use the MIDI features a VST 2.0-compatible host application such as Cubase VST (PC version 3.7 or higher / Mac version 4.1 or higher) or Nuendo (version 1.5 or higher) is required.
The voice technology patents were licensed from TCHelicon/IVL. VoiceMachine is available at specialist stores now, priced at Euro 152,87.
