Stereo basics: what is Stereo Sound and Audio
Stereo is the audio standard that is used in most consumer equipment. Although the surround sound system is gaining ground, it is still mostly used for movies.
The stereo format is a 2 channel format which is used to create a realistic image of the sound. Making it sound like it is coming from different directions in front of you. The mono system only uses one channel and you would probably think that every sound is really coming from the one single speaker that is used.
The idea behind using a stereo format is that you use the channels in a way so that the listener does not think the sound is coming from one of the two speakers. So that is also what you need to keep in mind when you are mixing! You are creating a field of sound where the listener is not going to ’think’ he/she is listening to two mono type channels.
