TL Audio DiGiCo D-TuBe First Digital Mic Preamp
Frankfurt's Pro Light + Sound will see the launch of the Worlds first digital console integrated remote digital tube microphone preamp module, the DiGiCo D-TuBe.
The D-TuBe is a unique alternative to the traditional 19 inch rack mount tube pre amps that are a favourite of sound engineers, liking the warmth that tubes give to specific instruments or vocals, inserting them into their systems to provide the characteristics they cannot otherwise get, whether using an analogue or digital mixing console.
As is often the case with good ideas, TL Audio's John Carroll along with DiGiCo's James Gordon and John Stadius were discussing this point over a few drinks on a Friday afternoon. Ideas and designs were swapped and manipulated until the D-TuBe concept was born.
The D-TuBe supplies no less than eight channels of tube pre amp per module and has been designed to fit neatly into existing DiGiCo systems by simply replacing the last input module on a stage rack and moving the output module along one. This keeps the full compliment of 56 inputs to the stage rack, with the last eight inputs now being a version of TL Audio valve pre's. with DiGiCo's renowned A to D conversion and remote gain control.
"We've found that when engineers use our consoles they tend to use little or no outboard, as there is so much integrated and recalled within our system," says Gordon. "However, the common denominator that was always cropping up was the desire for the inclusion of a few channels of valve/tube technology to enhance and colour specific instruments or vocals. We're always keen to react to what the market wants, so the D-TuBe is a logical addition to our product line adding just the right amount of colour to the mix."
Added Carroll, "Sound engineers the World over have come to depend on TL Audio front ends to provide them with their required sound and it seemed a natural progression to combine our valve technology along side DiGiCo's amazing digital technology".
As the D-TuBe is able to slot into the Stage DiGiRACK, it has the shortest cable length between the mic and pre amp possible, giving exceptional signal to noise ratio. As the analogue gain is inserted before the TuBe it also acts as a drive control, and with digital gain after the tube a wide variation of colouration - or DiGistortion as DiGiCo like to call it - is possible. And, as is standard on all DiGiCo products, these settings can be saved as part of the consoles snapshots and sessions.
