What is Mixing or a Mixing Engineer?

Mixing can be seen as a simple job of taking multiple audio tracks and mixing them down to a single mono track using a mixer. The mixer is used to set the volume of the different audio tracks in the end signal. The job of the mixing engineer in this case is very easy. It is a simple task but it is already a job that involves listening closely and making a decision on what sounds good. Why is one track a little louder than the other? To you it might sound like a good song or soundtrack with a heavy beat, but in my taste it may sound like I can hardly hear the singer.
